About AutoBooks

Built by a contractor who knows exactly what HMRC is looking for — and what your accountant should be telling you.

AutoBooks exists because most contractor accountants file what you give them. We think your accountant should be telling you what to give them — and why. That difference is the gap between a compliant limited company and an optimised one. Chris built AutoBooks to close that gap, for contractors who expect more than a receipt box and an annual return.

Chris — Founder

Chris spent over 20 years working as a contractor across some of the UK's most demanding sectors — government, retail, media, and financial services. Specialising in finance, compliance, and regulatory work, Chris sat inside large organisations during periods of significant regulatory change: post-crisis financial reform, IR35 rule changes, Making Tax Digital rollouts, and the steady tightening of HMRC's approach to personal service companies.

That breadth of experience matters. A contractor who has worked inside a regulated financial institution understands the compliance pressure those clients operate under. One who has worked across government knows how IR35 status determinations get made in practice, not just in theory. Twenty years across four sectors means Chris has encountered virtually every variation of the contractor tax question — and dealt with most of them personally before advising anyone else.

AutoBooks was built from that accumulated experience. The frustration that drove it was straightforward: most contractor accountants are excellent at compliance but passive on planning. They ensure the numbers are right but rarely ask whether the numbers could be better — whether dividend timing is optimised, whether pension contributions are structured efficiently, whether the IR35 position is documented well enough to survive a challenge. AutoBooks is built to be the accountant that asks those questions before you do.

Chris holds AATQB (AAT Qualified Bookkeeper) status and brings direct contracting experience across HMRC compliance, corporate governance, and financial regulation to every client relationship. AutoBooks is registered with [relevant bodies placeholder] and maintains professional indemnity insurance.

"I spent two decades as a contractor watching colleagues leave money on the table because their accountant only looked backwards. AutoBooks looks forward."

How We Produce Our Content

All content on AutoBooks is written or reviewed by a qualified specialist with direct contracting experience. We do not publish automated content, AI-generated articles, or copy produced without subject matter oversight.

Our guides and information pages are reviewed for accuracy against current HMRC guidance, ICAEW/AAT technical standards, and Companies House requirements. Pages are updated when material changes occur — including HMRC rule changes, IR35 legislative updates, dividend tax rate changes, and MTD requirement shifts.

Where we reference tax treatment, HMRC thresholds, or compliance requirements, we do so based on the current tax year and current legislation. Threshold figures are reviewed and updated at the start of each tax year as a minimum.

Content reviewed and updated regularly. If you spot anything out of date, contact us.
